Playa del Carmen to Chichén Itzá: your options

Playa del Carmen (PDC) is about 30 minutes closer to Chichén Itzá than Cancún. That translates to a later pickup time (6:30–7:00 AM vs 6:00–6:30 AM) and an earlier return, small differences that matter on a long day.

Option 1: Guided tour (recommended)

Day tours from Playa del Carmen cost $85–$110 for the all-inclusive option and include hotel pickup, certified guide, entrance fee, buffet lunch, and a cenote swim. Some tours pick up from the Riviera Maya hotels as well.

Most PDC tours join the same itinerary as Cancún groups at the ruins, but the smaller pickup area means you spend less time collecting passengers in the morning. The experience at the site is identical.

Option 2: Drive yourself

Take Highway 305 north to the autopista (180D) and head west toward Valladolid/Chichén Itzá. Total drive time: about 2 hours. Tolls total approximately $350 MXN each way. The road is excellent, straight, well-maintained, and clearly signed.

  • Leave by 7:00 AM to arrive before the crowds
  • Bring pesos for tolls and the entrance fee
  • Parking at the site: $80 MXN
  • Consider stopping in Valladolid on the way back, it's directly on the route

Option 3: Bus

ADO buses depart from the Playa del Carmen bus terminal (5a Avenida). The trip takes about 2.5–3 hours with typically 2 departures per day. It's the cheapest option (~$450 MXN round trip) but you'll be without a guide at the site.
